Was that the question about if people based their purchases on safety ratings? I think I remember it sounding slightly snarky to me, but tone never really comes through in print.

That could be. Maybe it was my “I’m still at work on a Friday afternoon. Get me the hell out of here.” attitude seeping through.

Regardless, I’t would be an interesting poll to see how much a minority I am in.

My sense is of the “is the car actually likely to go out of its way to murder me? No? Good.” kind. Crippling flaws leave me wary, ordinary fine spectra of safety are not really that high on my list.

I found it hilarious how the one guy was all “piece of shit death traps designed with safety standards 10 years ago” then follows up with “in 15 years I’m going to give my child/siblings child my piece of shit deathtrap designed with safety standards today”.

That was my thoughts as well. Additionally, the star rating seems to be a bit arbitrary at best. If they provided a bit of actual numbers behind the rating system I would be more inclined to pay attention to it. Show us how much energy is dissipated, absorbed or deflected instead of saying “oh, that’s bad”.

People definitely jumped down your throat like whoa. That being said, like a solid 50% of the reason why I'd look a car would be safety. A good safety rating wouldn't include a car to my search, but a bad one would certain exclude.

I am trying to be as gracious as I can in my replies...

When the topic comes up with my Mother In Law (because my eldest is 10 and we totally need to be worrying about this now /s) I often troll her by saying I wan’t them in a Smart, Miata, or comparable base sub-compact instead of the CUV she insists on driving.

I would think I would have learned not to be surprised by peoples reactions but everyday it seems to catch me of guard. Your approach seems both logical and viable.

Yeah man. I work for a safety supplier. Car companies shit their pants about five star crash ratings. I heard it costs around 100k each time they do one of those barrier tests with the full car
